Yeah, it was a tough job to introduce rock music in Nepal. But the boys from Kathmandu somehow did it after being influenced by western bands such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc. during the 70s and 80s. The bands from Kathmandu such as The Influence and Crossroads released their own albums which motivated other bands to record their own songs. We found it even more harder to list down top 10 rock bands of Nepal as there are so many popular bands in Nepal now.
Music has been an integral part of Nepali culture. The genre of Nepali music is highly diversified with various ethnic groups and they do have their own history and geographical significance. Putting other genres aside, today we are going to look at rock music of Nepal.
Despite having less musical gadgets and opportunities in music the bands didn’t give up and continued contributing which resulted in grabbing market in music. Nepali musicians are being professionals and proving that one can survive within Nepal in music field. There is no doubt that Nepali musicians are really talented and passionate in music. Now, let’s take a look on top 10 rock bands of Nepal in present context.
Albatross is a Nepali rock music band consisting of four members started in 1999. After lots of ups and downs this band has now established as one of the best bands which is popular among Nepalese youths and has contributed in taking Nepali rock music in a higher level. The chemistry of the band members is pretty good which helped them to release some successful albums. Have a look at this legendary song ‘Farki Farki Nahera Malai’.
9. Robin and The New Revolution
Everyone is familiar with this unique band, specially the distinctive voice and attitude of none other than Robin Tamang (dai), who has won hearts of many people. Initially, the band was named Robin n Looza before the replacement of band members. The music lover Robin Tamang was born in Singapore and grew up in Canada before settling in his root country Nepal. Although he was born in another country, he made his music career in his motherland and proved how much love and affection he has towards his nation and he has also been a source of inspiration to young generation.
8. The Shadows Nepal
The Shadows is one of the finest rock band from Narayangarh, Chitwan, Nepal. They were established in 1997/1998 and their first album was titled ‘ Suna Hamro Awaz’. Their second album was a success in the Nepali market and earned them the best band, best music and the best performance of the year 2006. The composition of music and the power in lyrics is the best part of this band which usually discusses social issues and awareness. And how about the vocal of Swopnil Sharma? That’s a natural gift for him and not many people have that kind of potential to sing with extra effort.
Mantra is well-known Nepali rock band formed in 2000, from Darjeeling, India. Within no time the Mantra band got popularity in Nepal and produced many popular songs. Bir Gorkhali, Himali Nepali, Ekantama and Sanskriti are some of them. It’s music and lyrics are well appreciated by the youth in Nepal. They create a very good atmosphere during concerts because they are true rockers.
6. Abhaya and The Steam Injuns
Abhaya and The Steam Injuns started its musical journey in 2003 playing live gigs in major hotels and pubs in India and Nepal. In the beginning it was an essentially acoustic blues band before they decided to kick off as a rock outfit, the passion and vision Abhaya Subba always had. The lead singer, Abhaya Subba is the founder member of the band. Their first self titled album, Abhaya and The Steam Injuns, released in February, 2005, surprised the Nepali audience, as the civilian had never ever seen such a bold female singer, with an enormous high enthusiasm to contribute in the music industry. They have already performed in countries like Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia, UAE, UK, Bhutan and India.
5. Sabin Rai and The Electrix
This band is one of the busiest bands in Nepal because they are invited in so many places in and outside the country due to their popularity. Infact, this is my best band. Sabin Rai, who used to be a solo singer singing in tracks, had already established in Nepalese Music Industry, but after forming a band he has gone to a higher level along with his band members making massive fans within no time. Their performance in stage is outstanding. The boys from Dharan have recently enjoyed Sikkim Music Tour. Personally, I am a huge fan of Sabin Rai and one day I will definitely meet him.
4. The Edge
Formed in 1998 in Pokhara, the Edge came in the Nepali Rock Scene with self titled debut in 2000. The melody of Jeevan Gurung has made far gigantic fans across the country. This band usually produces love songs in a slow rock pattern which is admired and memorized by fans once released. They have done musical tour outside the country and often invited to perform in front of Nepalese crowd.
“Cobweb” band is one of the most popular bands in Nepalese Music Industry. They are well known for the pop and rock music. The band was formed in 1992 by Dibesh and Mahesh. Before forming this band, they were in “Riser” band. They were influenced by the English bands, like Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, AC/DC and many others. This band is mostly focused on the live concerts while making music videos because they think their fans and people can directly interact with their music and their performance. They are mostly popular by songs like “Mercedes Benz”, “Preet ko Nasha”, “Maryo ni Maryo ni” etc. They have performed in various places inside and outside the country.
2. 1974 A.D
1974 AD is a nepali national rock band, formed in Kathmandu, Nepal in the early 1990s. They experiment with various genre of music including Nepali folks, ragas, rock, funk, blues, and jazz as well. 1974 AD are amongst the most successful recording artists in Nepal. Their concert name being ‘Rock Yatra’ in 2000 AD was watched by more than 60,000 people, the largest attendance for a concert in Nepal. Their songs, like “Nepali,” “Sambodhan,” “Pahilo Junima,” ” Parelima,” “Samjhi Baschu,” and “Chudaina Timro Mayale” amongst various others, were some of the biggest hits in Nepalese music. They have also received many prestigious awards.
Words are less to describe the fame of Nepathya band because every music lover know the standard of this band and the effort they had put to take Nepali music in international stage is tremendous. Nepathya has performed in many countries and prestigious stages. In fact this is the first band to perform at Wembley Arena, UK on August 3, 2013 which was also the biggest ever performance by a Nepali band. Nepathya was formed in the early 1990s by the students from Pokhara while studying in Kathmandu, Nepal. This band is best known for blending folk melodies with modern western influenced rock music. Nepathya has enjoyed both commercial and critical success. It is well known for contemporary tunes that have strong ties with indigenous music and songs sung using regional dialects from rural Nepal. Amrit Gurung, the vocalist of the band, has played a major role in taking the band to the best of the best.
It would be like committing a crime to underrate other bands because they are also really artistic and vigorous musicians.
