Gagan Kumar Thapa has been officially elected President of the Nepali Congress in a landslide victory at the 15th General Convention. However, subsequent vote counting for other key office-bearer positions encountered procedural delays at the party central headquarters in Sanepa on Saturday afternoon.
The Central Election Committee made the formal presidential announcement on Saturday morning following the completion of counting at Bhrikutimandap. Thapa's commanding win comes after key senior rivals withdrew from the race earlier this week, consolidating convention delegates behind his leadership.
While the presidential contest reached a decisive conclusion, counting for the critical positions of Vice President (two posts) and General Secretary (two posts) encountered friction upon moving to the party headquarters in Sanepa, Lalitpur.
"Contestant representatives alleged that two ballot boxes arrived with damaged external security seals and claimed that transit handover deeds were missing." — Candidate Polling Agents
The Central Election Committee firmly rejected allegations of deliberate tampering. Committee officials explained that severe rainstorms during midday transit between Bhrikutimandap and Sanepa damaged outer protective wrapping, but affirmed that primary security seals and inner ballots remained completely intact.
Election officials convened a joint meeting with polling agents from all contesting panels to cross-examine box serial numbers against official polling registers and agree on an authorized reconciliation protocol before resuming counting.
